If you play it safe now, you’re going to sell yourself short in the end.

We’ve all heard the saying, If you are the smartest person in the room, find a different room.

Why? Smart people make you smarter. It’s as simple as that. Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer has an anecdote that sums up why.

She says, “Laura Beckman was the daughter of my piano teacher and a great volleyball player. was given the choice of joining the varsity team, where she would sit on the bench for the year, or junior varsity, where she would start every game.

“Laura shocked everyone and chose varsity. The next year she came back as a senior, made varsity again and was a starter. The rest of the players who had been on junior varsity were benched for their entire senior year.

I asked Laura: ‘How did you know to pick varsity?’ Laura told me: ‘I just knew if I got to practice and play alongside the best players every day, it would make me better. And that’s exactly what happened.’ The same thing happens in the professional workplace.”

The road to success is NOT a straight path. You can climb the corporate ladder but in the end you’re going to come in second to someone like Laura.

So take Laura’s approach. Think long term and think strategy!

Be humble. No one in their 20s has truly made it. If you think you’ve peaked, it’s time to find another mountain. Your 20s are the time to learn and grow. Don’t think money, think strategy. Work for free, ask for guidance, build your network, surround yourself with successful people who inspire you to up your game, do whatever it takes to gather as much knowledge and experience as you possibly can.

If you play it safe now, you’re going to sell yourself short in the end.

Must Read Books/How to Master a Skill

How often are you actively investing in furthering your education? How often are you scheduling out time in your day to listen to a podcast, take an online course, read a book, attend a conference or panels, meet with a mentor, etc.

Take a moment and think about it. When was the last time that you set aside time to invest in your education and actually learn something new. And no, mandatory events and workshops from your work do not count.

If it’s been more than a week since you did this, then this ones for you!

You should be setting time aside every single week to learn something new. If you want to stand out and be truly successful, you have to develop a specialized skill set and not just develop it but seek to master it.

Mastery doesn’t happen by chance. It is the result of intentionally and consistently investing time, effort and dedication.

If you feel like you genuinely don’t have time during the week. Then Sunday is a great day to dedicate to this. And it shouldn’t feel like a chore. In fact, this is a time that I genuinely look forward to every week.

So, if you’re looking for a new book and/or if this dedication sounds anything like you, then I highly recommend you check out @garyvee newest book - Crushing It. I’m sure most of you already know/follow @garyvee but for anyone who doesn’t, this guy is truly impressive and inspiring!

High Performance Habits with Brendon Bruchard

I’ve been listening to @brendonburchard ebook podcast, High Performance Habits, and he references this quote from Howard Thurman.

It resonated with me because as business owners and entrepreneurs I feel like we are always pushing ourselves to solve consumer problems with new and innovative solutions. This is important, but it’s not the key to success. I truly believe that the key to success is passion! Passion drives motivation, innovation and dedication. All of these are essential to achieving and maintaining high performance and lasting success!

How many of you have listened to or read High Performance Habbits??

If you haven’t, I highly recommend it. I love @brendonburchard I think his teaching style is incredible and his story is so inspiring! (And he recently released the book on the podcasts app for free!) Check it out and let me know what you think! 😆

The Introverts Guide to Fearless Networking

We all know networking is important but as an introvert it honestly can suck and cause major anxiety. So, if that’s you, how do you conquer this skill? Here’s my top tips that have and continue to help me throughout my career.

1. Firm hand shake, eye contact, no gum! - self explanatory

2. Know your sh*t - when you know what your talking about it inside and out it is soooo much easier to present it when you’re put on the spot!

3. Take control of the convo - ask the questions! When you are leading the conversation and asking the questions you don’t have to worry about what’s coming next. Instead you can relax and focus on being present!

4. Ask them questions about themselves - people love to talk about themselves and it actually makes the conversation more memorable to them. Plus it takes the pressure off of you! win/win

5. Be yourself - don’t try to be the chattiest person in the room if that’s not your personality! Be confident in who you are and what you bring to the table. Chances are the real you is pretty great so let that shine!

6. Always be gracious. Please and thank you are not just something you learn as a kid. Manners matter! Especially when it comes to making a first impression.

7. BE BRAVE! When it comes to networking nobody is too important or too high up for you to introduce yourself too. Take a deep breath, fix your hair (if you have hair), and march yourself over to them and say hello.

Is Job Loyalty Dead?

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life. And the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart you’ll know when you find it.” – Steve Jobs

As an employer we all want to hire the people who believe the work we are doing is great work.

So how do you find these people?! And once we do find them, how do we nurture and develop them so that they continue to feel empowered, invested and motivated?

The number one thing you can do for your employees is to add value and meaning to their work. Hire the best people you possibly can and then get out of their way! Give them the power to make the job their own and do it in their own way. Genuine satisfaction comes from accomplishment and the feeling that we have completed something difficult and important. So if you want to keep your employees satisfied you must consistently give them harder and more meaningful work!

It seems so intuitive but unfortunately more and more company’s are straying away from this model. They assume that job loyalty is dead and therefore investing time or resources into growing and retaining employees is a waste. It’s a vicious cycle because the less company’s invest in their people, the more employees feel the need to leave in order to grow and progress their careers.

The downside to this is that for employees: the working conditions are quickly decreasing, and so the level of responsibility and the meaningfulness of their work. For employers: the quality of work and motivation of their employees is also decreasing. It’s a loose, loose situation for both sides!!

Before starting AMR, I worked for several companies where this was the standard. And as a low level employee it totally sucked! I felt discouraged, lost, unmotivated and replaceable every day.

As AMR continues to grow and as all of your businesses do the same, we have the power to stop this cycle. We have the ability to bring loyalty and satisfaction back into the workplace! We can choose to invest in our employees and empower them!

The Future is Remote

I believe that the future of the working world is remote!

@nasdaq predicts that 43% of the U.S. workforce will be freelancers by 2020.

Especially for those of us who work in creative industries, we need inspiration! And no matter how modern or cool your office space is, nothing compares to the natural beauties and wonders of the world!

This photo is from Claude Monet’s personal garden in Giverny, France. Monet was an incredibly talented artist, there’s no doubt about that. But also, when you see these gardens he worked in everyday it makes totally sense!! This place is magical and inspiring beyond belief! This is the type of environment that creative minds thrive in!!
