If you play it safe now, you’re going to sell yourself short in the end. 

We’ve all heard the saying, If you are the smartest person in the room, find a different room. 

Why? Smart people make you smarter. It’s as simple as that. Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer has an anecdote that sums up why.

She says, “Laura Beckman was the daughter of my piano teacher and a great volleyball player. was given the choice of joining the varsity team, where she would sit on the bench for the year, or junior varsity, where she would start every game.

“Laura shocked everyone and chose varsity. The next year she came back as a senior, made varsity again and was a starter. The rest of the players who had been on junior varsity were benched for their entire senior year. 

I asked Laura: ‘How did you know to pick varsity?’ Laura told me: ‘I just knew if I got to practice and play alongside the best players every day, it would make me better. And that’s exactly what happened.’ The same thing happens in the professional workplace.”

The road to success is NOT a straight path. You can climb the corporate ladder but in the end you’re going to come in second to someone like Laura.

So take Laura’s approach. Think long term and think strategy! 

Be humble. No one in their 20s has truly made it. If you think you’ve peaked, it’s time to find another mountain. Your 20s are the time to learn and grow. Don’t think money, think strategy. Work for free, ask for guidance, build your network, surround yourself with successful people who inspire you to up your game, do whatever it takes to gather as much knowledge and experience as you possibly can.

The Biggest Marketing Mistake Small Businesses Make

I tell this to my clients all the time. The power of social media is that it levels the playing field for businesses. You no longer need a huge corporate advertising budget to reach the masses.

Social media gives you the power to build your own audience for little to no cost. 

There are 3 parts to building an effective social media strategy for a business. 
1. Number of followers
2. Quality of followers
3. The content you are posting

When you see your account start to grow it’s easy to get caught up in the number of followers and neglect the other two components. The reason this is dangerous is because the power of your social media lies in the loyalty of your audience NOT the size of it. 

So how do you build and measure the loyalty of your audience. In the social media world we call this statistic: Engagement. This is a measurement of the percentage of your following that is actively engaging with your content and taking steps to learn more about your products and brand. These people have entered the first step of your sales funnel and are on their way to becoming paying customers. This is arguably the most important statistic for businesses to focus on when measuring a successful social media strategy or campaign.

The last but definitely not least component is content. Having a large and engaged audience means nothing if you’re not conveying a clear message! 

The content you post on your social media is not the same as what you would post in a traditional advertisement. Meaning it is not a sales pitch. I tell my clients to think of this content as their gift of free education to their audience. You want to teach your followers about your brand, who you are, what you stand for, and what you have to offer. The goal is not a quick sale. The goal is to build trusting and lasting relationships. These relationships create loyal customers.

The great news is that any business can do this and it’s free! So if you are a small business, an entrepreneur or even a soloprenuer it’s time to STOP THINKING SMALL! The tools are technology are here, so get on board and take advantage of it!

I’ve been listening to @brendonburchard ebook podcast, High Performance Habits, and he references this quote from Howard Thurman. 

It resonated with me because as business owners and entrepreneurs I feel like we are always pushing ourselves to solve consumer problems with new and innovative solutions. This is important, but it’s not the key to success. I truly believe that the key to success is passion! Passion drives motivation, innovation and dedication. All of these are essential to achieving and maintaining high performance and lasting success!

The Cost of Kindness

It costs absolutely nothing to be kind and supportive! 

Starting your own business is a wild and crazy and emotional roller coaster. All of you entrepreneurs out there know this. And I’m sure you all remember those people who made you feel insecure about your dreams. The ones who told you that you’d never make it, and urged you to play it safe and minimize your ambition. The ones who were just waiting for you to fail (and you did, but you got up and KEPT TRYING). Sometimes it’s not the words they say but just the tone of their voice or look in their eye that you can tell they think you’re crazy.

Now I want you to reflect on who your biggest supporter is. The person or people that have been there and believed in through every up and down. The ones who challenge you to think even bigger because they know you are destined for great things. These are the people who help us rise!

It’s up to you who you want to be. You can’t control the haters but you can control yourself and how you impact the people you know and love. So be that person that inspires and supports others. Entrepreneurship can be a rocky and lonely path. Everyone needs someone in their corner to believe in them and cheer them on!

@mattgottesman always has the wisest words! This one really resonates with me though. 

One of the most challenging and also rewarding parts of owning your own business is holding the power to write your own code of ethics. You no longer have a boss to tell you what’s right or wrong. In fact when you start, you don’t really have anyone. It’s up to you to decide what’s right, moral and ethical and what’s not. 

This can be intimidating, trust me I get it! Im still figuring this one out. All I know for sure is that you have to stay true to your values and your vision. At the end of the day that’s what makes your brand.

It's never too late to be whoever you want to be!

I’ve had a print out of this quote hanging in my bedroom for the past five years. It’s one of my all time favorites. 

After graduating from college I took my first job at @yelpsf. I quickly realized that it was a horrible fit for me. I literally felt like I was withering away in a stuffy office while this huge world of opportunity passed me by. (I know that sounds dramatic) but It was completely soul crushing and left me feeling beat down and depressed every single day. 


I couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong with me. There were thousands of other people working this same job, in the same office and they were doing just fine. Why was I so miserable?! ...maybe I was just lazy? Unmotivated? Not cut out for the working world? I thought up countless reasons. It took me a long time to realize that these reasons were really just excuses. I knew I needed a change and a big one but I was scared to start all over.

Finally I couldn’t take it anymore, so I quit my job. I left San Francisco. I changed my circle, surround myself with positive people who knew that there wasn’t anything wrong with me. People who saw I was destined for something bigger and greater in life when I couldn’t see it in myself. It was freaking hard, it took time and adjustment but slowly and surely I felt my fire start burning again! My dreams got bigger, my motivation stronger, and with that came results! And guess what?! AMR is still a tiny little baby with a super bright future and so many more exciting things to come! 

So for anyone out there who may feel stuck, depressed or hopeless in their current situations. Just know, there is nothing wrong with you! Starting over is hard but the payoff is huge. So find yourself a great support system and take the leap! I believe in you!!
