Why Brand Recognition Matters for Your Business and How to Improve Yours

Wondering how you can compete with businesses that are dominating within your industry? Start with building better brand awareness for your business. Using unique branding will help your business become more recognizable—that improved brand recognition will then give you the leverage you need to stand out among major competitors and will keep your business at the top of customer’s minds.

How long does it take to make an impression?

Did you know that it takes—on average—at least seven impressions (that means seeing content, hearing an ad, word of mouth) before people begin to remember your business? It’s one of the reasons why we encourage business owners and entrepreneurs to show up on social media often, and consistently.

Does branding really matter?

In addition to those much-needed impressions to make a person remember your brand —meaning the colors and aesthetic you choose to represent your business—becomes essential for brand recognition, too.

Sticking to a succinct color scheme throughout all of your content is going to benefit you tremendously. So, if your favorite color is purple, you want to ensure that your logo, your website, your social media feeds, your ads, etc. ALL incorporate purple. Ideally, you want people to immediately think of you when they see the color purple.

Think about it, when you see pink and orange, you think Dunkin Donuts, red and yellow—McDonald’s. The list goes on and on with brands that have turned simple colors into brand recognition gold. Solidifying these kinds of color associations in consumers’ minds means you're nailing your branding!

How can my current clients help with brand recognition?

Word of mouth is the ‘OG’ way of building brand awareness before online-marketing and social media were even a thing. Today, it still stands as one of the greatest ways to build awareness and recognition for your business. So, don’t forget to include your current clients in your brand recognition-building strategies!

Giving your past and present clients an incentive to help spread the word about your business is always a good idea. Want them to leave a review or refer a friend? Offer a discounted rate for their next purchase or a free gift from your product or service line.

What are some things I can do to start building better brand recognition today? Here are 8 tips!

1.     Create a clear and consistent brand aesthetic

Choose a font family to use, choose your colors, and establish your tone and voice.

2.     Be collaborative

If your business is new, collaborating with established businesses will help you reach more people. Write guest blogs, do a social media collaboration, or team up for a project or campaign.

3.     Learn more about implementing SEO best practices

Using on-brand keywords will help your business turn up in user searches which means more exposure for your business.

4.     Create shareable content

This is content that appeals so much to your viewers, that they want to share it with their own community. Think infographics, value-add tips, and tricks.

5.     Create a referral incentive program for current clients

Not only does this build community, but it literally gets you new clients which is every businesses goal. Try offering your clients 10% of your services for every client they successfully refer to you.

6.     Show up on social media platforms often and consistently

As previously mentioned, in order to make an impression on prospective customers, they have to see your company or work multiple times. So having an inactive social media account that posts once in a blue moon isn’t going to cut it. Having a strong and consistent presence on social media is what attracts customers.

7.    Offer valuable freebies

Everyone loves a freebie—offer something unique to your brand that will leave customers wanting to come back for more, and will be willing to pay for it!

8.     Run ads on social media platforms

You should prioritize running ads on the platform where your ideal client shows up on most. For example, if your ideal client spends 90% of their time on Instagram and 10% of their time on Facebook, Instagram ads will be much more effective.
