Splice Video Editor: The “Reel” Deal

By Laura Lawrence | June 13, 2022

ICYMI… I LOVE making reels. Like, borderline obsessed. I love that through the editing process we’re able to take specific media components and reimagine them into a story that, even in its short form, can invoke strong emotions. Whether these emotions be humor or empathy, nostalgia or curiosity, from a marketing standpoint the power lies in the lasting impression. As consumer attention spans become increasingly shorter, we as content creators have a unique job to develop reels content that really stands out.

I’ve learned that the editing process plays a key role in the success of a reel. (And by “success” I’m referring to the overall outcome from the creator’s perspective. Does the finished product match your initial expectations and intentions?) Therefore, the editing program you choose is essential. While there are lots of editing apps and programs out there, I’m here to share my favorite that rules them all in my eyes. The Queen, if you will. Yes, we can call it the “Beyonce” of video editing apps IMO if we’re trying to place a popularity element to this.

I’m “Crazy in Love” with Splice and here’s why: Splice Video Editor is a mobile app that makes it easy to create professional-looking videos in a user-friendly format. When I created my first reel I had no experience with trimming clips, adding audio, overlaying images and text, or any other important features. Splice offers a large range of editing tools that are beginner friendly and intuitive.

Some of my favorite Splice features include:

Multiple Media Capability

Splice allows me to select multiple videos and photos from my camera roll to add to my project. Once added it’s so easy to move them around within my project. A simple click and drag feature works smoothly, making sequencing my clips a breeze!

Overlay

The overlay function is my personal fave. I use this feature as an editing hack for timing up trending audio with my videos. I simply upload my preferred audio into my editing project in Splice as an overlay, and then “hide” it from the original video I’m editing. This is PERFECTION when it comes to matching video to audio transitions from other platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Aspect Ratios

Before I even begin my project Splice makes me select the aspect ratio for my video. Options include TikTok, Instagram reel, Instagram story, and YouTube. This is HUGE because I can edit my video knowing that the format is already compatible with the platform I choose to publish to.

Special Features Libraries

The selection of effects, filters, and even clip transition options are a lot more diverse than other apps. Audio Functions: Splice’s large audio library makes it easy to add music, sounds and even voiceovers. The additional ability to layer all of these elements in the same project is *chef’s kiss*.

Exporting Videos

Exporting the finished product is easy and Splice is notorious for producing high-quality videos.

One feature of Splice that leaves something to be desired is the text function. With a limited selection of fonts to choose from I like to use Canva for custom font addition. Happy Splicing!
