Company Page vs. Personal Page on LinkedIn: Which is better for you?

By Julia Sames | February 21, 2023

For large businesses, this question is a no-brainer. Of course you need a company page on LinkedIn! At the very least, your employees need a page that they can link to in their work history.

But as companies grow smaller, the answer to this question becomes more nuanced. If you are your only employee, you may be asking yourself: what’s the point of creating yet another page to keep up with?

It’s a legitimate question!

By running through the five questions we’ve laid out below, you should arrive at a clear answer.
And before you get bogged down by this conundrum: There is nothing wrong with having both a personal page and a professional page. In fact, we would encourage it! Sharing news, updates, and even everyday content from your business to your personal page is a great way to multiply your engagement and help spread the word about your business.

The most important question: Are you the brand? Or do you envision that this brand will grow into something larger than you?

This is a small but important distinction. Perhaps if you are a freelancer, author, motivational speaker, artist, or consultant, your name is your brand. When people hire you, they think of you as a person rather than the name of your LLC. Your brand voice is YOUR voice.

If this is the case, you may not need a company LinkedIn page. You should focus your energy in growing your personal brand through your personal page.

But if you are looking to promote your services through your business, in a voice that is perhaps more professional than your own, then it is probably worth creating your own company page to do this.

Do you have or plan to have employees?

If your goal is to eventually grow and hire employees, then a company page is definitely the way to go. Your future staff will want to link a certified business to their own LinkedIn page and share content that the company is sharing, rather than you personally.

Do you want to run ads to widen your audience?

If ads are part of your LinkedIn growth strategy, then a company page is for you. You can’t run ads on a personal page!

Do you have an engaged following that you connect with via DM?

A drawback of company pages is that they cannot direct message their followers (or anyone else for that matter). If your DMs are always buzzing with activity, then perhaps your energy is better spent focused on your personal page.

Are you interested in hosting events, promoting newsletters, comparing yourself against competitors, tracking leads, etc.?

By and large, LinkedIn company pages have loads more to offer in the realm of features and analytics.

If LinkedIn is an important part of your business’ marketing strategy, creating a company page will allow you much more agility and competitive edge than a personal page would.

Bonus question: Do you have the bandwidth to monitor and produce content for another social media page?

Yes? Awesome! No? Click here to see if you should hire an an agency to help you out.
